Asian American International Film Festival Summary

Event Overview: The Asian American International Film Festival, or AAIFF New York for short, is one of the longest running Asian film festivals in the United States. It is also one of the first film festivals originating in New York. AAIFF New York runs in the summer months for just under two weeks each year.

What to Expect: AAIFF New York features impressive line-ups of films during the summer and also offers interesting workshops and classes that discuss elements of making film.

  • Diverse Lineup: The films range from different Asian cultures and include a mix of some of the greatest independent films out of popular film-meccas such as Japan, Hong Kong, and more.
  • Student and Amatuer Celebrations: Film makers that come from an Asian descent are welcome to submit their films to the Asian American Film Festival for screenings. It's a celebration of overseas films and the work of those of Asian nationality that now live in the States.
  • Cinema Contest: The amateur film submissions are for their film festival contest. A panel of judges for AAIFF NYC will award one of six finalists a grand prize of $3000 during the awards ceremony at the end of the festival.

Inside Knowledge: The first Asian American International Film Festival in New York City was held in 1978, and it was organized by Asian Cinevision.

Event Hints:

  • Consider a Workshop: The workshops at AAIFF NYC are a little expensive, but they are also very informative on the topics that they cover.
  • Book Your Screening Tickets Early: You will want to make sure that you book screening tickets for the films in advance. Sometimes these things sell out.
  • Check Them Out on Tour: AAIFF NYC also tours the United States with its collection of short and independent Asian films. If you can't make it out to the festival, then you may be able to catch them at a location that is closer to where you live.

Everyone Should Experience the Asian American International Film Festival

Film lovers of all types should make time to take in one of the movies at the Asian American International Film Festival.  Sometimes this festival has a theme (such as young filmmakers) and other times it is just a compilation of many diverse and talented filmmakers.  You can check out the AAIFF website to find a film that speaks to you; if you just show up at a random film, you may still find it pretty entertaining because there are many highly-acclaimed films at this festival.
