...the most completely
satisfying structure of any kind...
Lewis Mumford
A
monument to man's ingenuity and creativity, this world famous steel suspension bridge was
designed by architect John Roebling between 1867 and 1883. Many lives were lost
constructing the first "hotlink" between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Interesting Brooklyn Bridge Fact: John Roebling died July 22, 1869 after beginning the design of the bridge. It was his son, Washington, who was the final designer and Chief Engineer. (Source - The Great Bridge by John McCullough)
The bridge's
renowned double-arched towers were set firmly into the East River's bedrock while the unprecedented
use of steel cables allowed for future bridges to span great distances.
But the Brooklyn Bridge remains an original - like most
NYC residents.
On the
Manhattan side, you can get some great views of this majestic bridge from the top of Pier
17 at the South Street Seaport.
That's the Manhattan Bridge behind it!
Grab a seat and rest those tired tourist
feet!
From Brooklyn, Pier 1
at the Fulton Ferry landing provides a beautiful sunset view of the bridge and downtown
Manhattan.
