Event Overview: The annual Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York is held in late April and early May. Cherry Blossoms in NY is a two-day event that not only celebreates the blooming of Cherry Blossoms in NY, but also Japanese culture as a whole. What to Expect: Not only can you see cherry blossoms in NY when they are blooming during this event, but it is also a family friendly weekend at the botanical gardens in Brooklyn with plenty of things to see and do.
- The Main Event: One of the biggest reasons for coming out during this traditional Japanese event is for the blooming of the cherry blossoms in NY. The trees themselves are a sight to behold during this time of year, and the lush colors in the trees make the festival a popular spot for families and friends to relax at for a weekend.
- Traditional Events: The Cherry Blossom Festival Brooklyn is also host to many traditional Japanese ceremonies and events during the weekend. This includes classic tea ceremonies, ikebana or the art of flower arranging, taiko drumming, as well as more interactive events that get guests involved in the beauty of traditional Japanese culture.
- Non-traditional Events: Looking for something a little more unique to this specific festival in Brooklyn? This cherry blossom festival also offers events such as presentations on the art found in manga (Japanese comics), as well as live music and dance from Japanese DJs.
Inside Knowledge: The Cherry Blossom Festival NYC has become one of Brooklyn's most popular spring events. It first began in 1980 where it had humble beginnings, but it has slowly grown into the popular outing that it has become over the years, as it attracts locals, tourists, and fans of old and new Japanese culture to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden each year.
Event Hints:
- Make It a Picnic: This is one of those events where we encourage you to bring a blanket and good company. Grab some traditional Japanese food at the event, and hold a little picnic under one of the cherry blossom trees.
- Come Early: This is especially true if you want to grab a seat under a cherry blossom tree. Make sure you come early and get in as soon as the festival opens if you would like to get a spot under one of the beautiful trees.
- Come with an Open Mind: This festival appreciates many aspects of Japanese culture, including old traditions and its heavily followed pop culture. Be ready to embrace all aspects of it. Trust us. You'll have a great time if you leave your mind open to all events held at the festival.
