In New York City, summertime is an outdoor concert free-for-all, literally, from tween scream-filled Bieber concerts to punk fests and afternoon backyard barbecue indie shows. Free summer concerts in New York City will be popping up left and right, all summer long throughout the streets and parks, beckoning locals and NYC tourists alike to enjoy the long summer days outside while tapping their feet to the beats of live music.  

Find the free NYC summer concerts in your preferred musical flavor, tune in and have a happy summer!

Summerstage

The annual Summerstage concert series in NYC is put on by CPF through well over 700 parks throughout New York City, presenting and promoting music, arts, education, sports and the love of parks. The Summerstage concerts take place in various NYC parks, like Central Park, Herbert Von King Park, Betsy Head Park, Red Hook Park and others. 

This year's Summerstage calendar is packed full of exciting mixed art events, like the Brooklyn / Queens Teen Day, a music gala honoring Jimi Hendrix, a Dance Theater Company event, the screening of Brooklyn Boheme with performance by Talib Kweli... and the list goes on. Further musical performances will include Foster the People, Tokyo Police Club, Kimbra, J. Holiday, Dawes, Alabama Shakes, Paige in Full, Young the Giant, Beach House and many more.

ABC's Good Morning America Summer Concert Series

ABC's Good Morning America will celebrate its 4th annual free summer concert series from May 25 - August 31, 2012 and the lineup is full of big names in pop, country, rock and classic rock. Performers will include Counting Crows, No Doubt, Neon Trees, LMFAO, The Beach Boys, Brad Paisley and Demi Lovato. 

The GMA Summer Concert Series 2012 will have one performance every friday during the live filming of Goof Morning America and they are open to the public. Interested viewers can head to Rumsey Playfield on Fridays starting at 6am to catch the show, from 7-9am.

Summer Thunder

Summer Thunder is the Williamsburg free summer concert series held at Union Pool, which will feature hip artists like Lone Wolf, Teen, Bubbles, Midnight Magic, Rocksteady Yeti, Turning Machine and more. Besides free music, there will also be free alcohol and El Diablo tacos. Kick back at these daytime backyard BBQ style free concerts in Williamsburg. 

Celebrate Brooklyn! June - August

Celebrate Brooklyn is a free summer concert series in NYC, celebrating its 34th annual series this summer. The 2012 Celebrate Brooklyn summer concert series is bringing iconic musicians from all over the globe to the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, for free performances all summer long. 

The 2012 Celebrate Brooklyn lineup includes: Jimmy Cliff, Childish Gambino, Sigur Ros, Wilco, Little Dragon, Lyle Lovett and a bunch more to come.  Besides free concerts, Celebrate Brooklyn also has Movie & Music nights, where they'll play movies including The Muppets and Saturday Night Fever, with a featured band. 

The Celebrate Brooklyn free summer concert series in NYC is a great time for all ages. 

Punk Island - June 24th

For one whole day, Governors Island will be turned into Punk Island, a NYC punk festival with bands like Skum City,  War Fear, Wombat in Combat, Panzie, The Homewreckers and many more.  The 2012 Punk Island event is all outdoors and totally free. 

NBC's Today Show Toyota Concert Series 2012

Usher kicked of the 2012 Today Show's NYC summer concert series on May 18th, and the series will continue on Fridays through August 31, 2012. Big names in June include The Band Perry, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Kenny Chesney and Maroon 5, followed by Flo Rida, Zac Brown Band and Hote Chelle Rae in July. Train and Jason Mraz will Finish up the series in August. 

Fans are welcome to watch the free Today Show concerts in the plaza at  49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza in NYC from May 26- August 18, 2012.

BAM Rhythm and Blues Festival

Looking for a free R&B festival in New York City? BAM is your best bet. Held at the MetroTech Commons in Brooklyn, from June 7-August 9, 2012 one headlining act  will play each Thursday at 12pm.  This years artists include Fishbone, Van Hunt, Blitz the Ambassador, Alo Blacc and many more.
