Gay Nightlife in New York City

Gay bars have been a part of New York City since 1966, when a "sip-in" was staged at the Julius Bar, one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the United States, to challenge the New York State Liquor Authority's rule prohibiting the serving of alcohol to gays. When the court ruled that gays could peacefully assemble at bars, another bar, the Stonewall Inn, opened in 1967. Since then, many other gay and lesbian bars have opened in NYC, and they are now firmly rooted in the community.

There are also many cool gay clubs in New York City. Two of the most popular are Rush NY and Eastern Bloc. The former, one of only a handful of 18+ gay clubs, features $5 Fridays, and the latter, a huge party haven located in Manhattan's East Village, features go-go boys and sexy decor. Both are well worth checking out on a Friday or Saturday night (go late if you want to catch the party in full swing!).
