The GO Airlink has to be the most convenient, affordable way to get to JFK or (in my case) LaGuardia. (The subway is probably cheaper but will likely take you over an hour to get to either airport, and there’s a good chance you’ll be standing much of the way.)
I booked the Airlink the night before leaving my hotel with the concierge, who recommended a time based on my flight departure. Super-easy, took five minutes and I put a $5 cash deposit down. Definitely plan ahead if you want to use the Airlink – the concierge told me that they generally they need two hours notice to get you on a shuttle.
My shuttle was scheduled to leave at 6:50am, but after checking out and walking out the entrance of my hotel at 6:25am to get a coffee, I was greeted by the shuttle driver. I didn’t catch his name, but he was really friendly and didn’t drive like a complete maniac. We picked up a couple other riders near Grand Central Terminal, and were at the airport by 7:15am. (This would have been a shorter journey had I stuck to the schedule and been a little less eager to get to the airport.)
Final cost was $21 (including the initial deposit, not including tip), and I made my flight with plenty of time to spare. Compare that to the $65 my friend paid for car service a couple days before, and tell me what you would you rather do?
Definitely consider the GO shuttle; it’s easy, convenient and - most of all - cheap.
