The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn showcases the cultural, social and technological history of urban public transportation in NYC through exhibitions, workshops, tours and educational programs. The largest metropolitan transportation institution in the world, the New York Transit Museum offers visitors an interactive, in-depth look at over 100 years of public transit in NYC.

Housed in an historic 1936 subway station in Brooklyn Heights, the New York Transit Museum takes visitors underground and back in time with permanent and changing exhibitions featuring photographs, artifacts, drawings, maps, documents, and artwork dedicated to the largest transportation network in North America.

Popular exhibits at the NY Transit Museum include:

  • On the Streets: A survey of surface transportation in NYC from the early 1800s to the 21st century, this permanent exhibition features historical artifacts, audio interviews, photographs, and other media showcasing the past, present, and future of above ground mobility in New York City. This kid-friendly, hands-on exhibit invites visitors to explore a simulated traffic intersection, child-sized trolley, refurbished 1960s taxi and 12-seat city bus.
  • Steel, Stone & Backbone: Photographs, artifacts, and videos documenting the construction of New York City's first subway line from 1900-1925 are displayed in this popular, awe-inspiring permanent exhibit at the NY Transit Museum.

In addition to their fascinating exhibitions, the New York Transit Museum features a calender of affordable and engaging events open to the public, ranging from panel discussions tackling themes like urban planning and sustainability to weekend photo workshops at Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal for kids and their parents.
