Something for Everyone at the International Center of Photography

Whether you're a professional photographer or someone who only takes photos at family gatherings, you'll enjoy the International Center of Photography.  ICP has many incredible photographs and multimedia works of art; many of their exhibits are very powerful and moving. You can even find nights that offer free admission (a donation is requested).

Additionally, if you are looking to brush up on your photography or photo editing skills, the ICP offers a great variety of classes taught by very well-qualified teachers.  This gallery is definitely worth a visit; however, if you have kids, you may want to leave them with a babysitter because this museum is not very fun for children and some of the images can be provocative.

NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: The International Center of Photography is a photography museum, school, and research center dedicated to promoting the art of photography through diverse historical and contemporary exhibitions. Here you will find the provocative and influential works of Alan B. Stone,  John Wood, Robert Capa, and Lena Herzog, among others.

Why We Go: One of the most exciting museums in New York, the International Center of Photography Museum exhibits works by both past and present masters of the photographic medium.

  • The Mexican Suitcase: The Mexican Suitcase exhibit at the International Center of Photography Museum features 4,500 35mm negatives of the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour, three of the nineteenth century's finest photographers. These rolls of film had been considered lost since 1939.
  • Cuba in Revolution: Like The Mexican Suitcase, the Cuba in Revolution exhibit at the NY Museum of Photography is both fascinating and disturbing. You will see black-and-white photographs of a beauty seldom seen in today's art world.
  • Support the Arts: When you go to the NY Museum of Photography, you actively support the arts and promote the photographic medium. A trip to this museum is not only educational, it's socially constructive.

Inside Knowledge: Founded in 1974, the International Center of Photography features rooms specifically designed for photographic displays, with state-of-the-art lighting and climate control systems. A store and cafe are also located on site.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Bring the Kids: Going to the NY Museum of Photography is an educational experience for people of all ages. By bringing your child with you to view the exhibits, you will have the chance to show the beauty of the photographic medium and perhaps inspire in your child a lifelong love of art. Children under 14 get in free.
  • Do Grab a Snack: The NY Museum of Photography features a cafe on site. Be sure to grab a bite when you're done touring the museum.
  • Don't Be Bored: The International Center of Photography is not your average museum. This spacious, modern building features some of the most striking and provocative photography exhibitions in the world. You'll be disturbed by the pictures of social unrest, moved by the frank depictions of poverty, inspired by the pictures of nineteenth-century fashions, and awed by the beauty of the color portraits.
  • Don't Miss a Gallery Tour: Guided gallery tours are available for those groups of ten or more who are intimidated by the vast size of the Photography Museum NYC. Be sure to reserve a tour three weeks in advance.
