NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Isamu Noguchi Museum shares a collection of artwork and sculptures from famous Japanese artist Isamu Noguchi. The Noguchi Museum is located in Astoria of Long Island City New York. It is the central location for all works from Isamu Noguchi, with the second location being a garden museum that is located in Mure Japan.

Why We Go: The Isamu Noguchi Museum features an extensive collection of beautiful sculptures and public space designs.

  • Captivating Work: The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City features works from Noguchi's career as an artist of sculptures and public spaces.
  • Famous Landmarks: The work from the Isamu Noguchi Museum can also be found throughout New York, as he made valuable architectural contributions to the city.
  • Influential: The abstract and talked about works of art that Isamu Noguchi created were influential in making Long Island City a haven for experimental art. He was one of the influences between places such as MoMA PS1.

Inside Knowledge: The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum was opened to the public in 1985. There is a second garden museum in Mure Japan was his work studio for the last 20 years of his life, as part of a collaboration with stonecutter Masatoshi Izumi.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Come Wednesday Through Sunday: There are live gallery talks at the Noguchi Museum starting at 2:00pm from Wednesday through Sunday. We recommend coming during these days and times.
  • Do Check Out the Public Spaces: It's not just the sculptures that Noguchi did that he was famous for. His work on creating an atmosphere from public space was one of his most influential strengths, and some of the exhibits both on-site and off-site from the museum offer something interesting for people to see.
  • Don't Come on Monday or Tuesday: The Noguchi is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Make sure you plan your trip for one of the other days of the week, preferrably on the first Friday of a month for pay-what-you-want specials.
  • Don't Miss MoMa PS1: The Noguchi Museum is one of many interesting experimental art exhibits in Long Island City. Be sure to check out MoMa PS1 while you are in town too.
