Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan and The Roots - For Free!

I spent a good portion of my morning at Rockefeller Plaza and as I was purchasing a ticket for the NBC Studio Tour, the woman helping me with the transaction offered me a free stand-by ticket for the taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. There was no commitment necessary, I just had to go to a specific hallway at a certain time (conveniently after my NBC Studio Tour ended in the same building) to see if I’d be let in or not.

My awesome studio tour ended and a frantic employee of the show made an announcement that they needed to fill audience seats for Jimmy’s rehearsal that would start in 10 minutes, so I followed her and went right in to see Jimmy practice his opening  monologue and test out other jokes on an audience.

It was so much fun and really cool to see the studio. During the rehearsal, the band isn’t there, and neither are the guests, it’s just the host and some crew members, and an audience that filled about 1/4 of the seats.

Immediately following the rehearsal it was time to meet for the stand-by process of seeing the actual live taping. I stood in  line and made some friends who had been to other live tapings around New York, like Letterman, Rachel Ray, etc. We all had high hopes of getting in, especially after most of us saw the rehearsal and learned (notably)Tracy Morgan, as well as Chef Mario Batali and comedian Pablo Francisco would be the guests.

It turned out, they were in need of all of us with stand-by tickets so the whole group got in.  It was an awesome experience, since I was already a fan of Jimmy, his studio band, The Roots, and the show, in general.  Tracy Morgan was an added bonus and the interaction between he and Jimmy was hilarious.

The studio was so much smaller than it appears on TV, and my favorite part was seeing the things they don’t show on the program, like improvised banter that runs too long and would normally be edited out, the crew members holding signs for Jimmy to wrap up a segment, while he’s having a great time trying to get Tracy Morgan on track, etc. Throughout the taping, not only was the audience laughing, but so were the crew and The Roots.

It was much a much easier process to get in than I would have expected from such a popular show. It was a great look at how shows are made and it’s definitely a cool feeling to be behind the scenes of a production.

Features: One of NYC's newest late night shows, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon at Rockefeller Plaza is one of the funniest new talk shows on TV. Watch live as Jimmy Fallon and The Roots crew entertain the live audience with celebrity guests and great bands each night at the Jimmy Fallon Late Night Show in Manhattan.

Why We Go: The Jimmy Fallon Show Late Night premiered on March 2, 2009 and has quickly become a popular talk show on NBC. Like other late night shows taped in Manhattan, Jimmy Fallon tickets are free.

  • Late Night TV Experience: Get a first-hand look at how a late night talk show is produced when you attend a taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
  • Free Tickets: Jimmy Fallon Show tickets are free to the general public, but usually must be booked at least one month in advance.
  • The Roots: One of the tightest and most energetic bands in the world, The Roots crew doubles as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Roots will keep you entertained throughout commercial breaks at the Jimmy Fallon Show, and are even known for the occassional jam with the musical guest of the night after the taping.

Inside Knowledge: If you want Jimmy Fallon tickets while you're in NYC but forgot to reserve in advance, you can take your chances with standby tickets. These are found at the Rockefeller Plaza NBC Studios marquee on 49th St, and it's recommended that Late Night with Jimmy Fallon hopefuls get there around 6:30am for the 9am ticket handouts.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Book Early: If you know you'll be in NYC ahead of time and want to see a taping of the Jimmy Fallon show, call ahead to ensure your reservation when the time comes.
  • Do Sit in the "Band Bench": Only for the biggest fans of the band playing that night, the Band Bench at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon gives visitors an up-close experience directly behind the band - as well as more face time on the TV.
  • Don't Count on Standby Tickets: Standby Jimmy Fallon tickets can be hard to come by and require lots of waiting in line. We recommend planning ahead the month before.
  • Don't Forget a Jacket: The 30 Rock Plaza Theater that hosts the Jimmy Fallon Late Night Show can get notoriously chilly in the winter.
