NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: The David Letterman Show is the popular CBS late-night talk show. This popular television mainstay has been airing since 1993, and the studio in which it is recorded is located in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan. Guests can attend these recordings by getting free tickets in advance at the studio, or you can get them online or on stand-by the day of a show you want to go to.

Why We Go: The David Letterman Show is a free show that provides a few hours of entertainment and a great experience of classic live audience programs that are filmed in New York.

  • Free: This is the thing we love most about live recordings in New York is that the tickets are usually free. This is no exception with David Letterman tickets, as you can get them either online, in-person, or on stand-by if you want into a specific show.
  • Easy: This show, unlike many other recordings in New York, does not have many of the usual problems surrounding the free live shows. Getting David Letterman tickets is explained in detail on their website, the waiting in line is only an hour or two, and the show itself comes with some pre-recording stand-up routines.
  • Entertaining: Since it is a requirement that the audience laughs loud and often to every joke told, they warm you up with some hilarious stand-up from one of their comedians. During commercial breaks and before the show begins, you are also treated to the live band which does a great job of keeping the energy high in between breaks.

Inside Knowledge: The Late Show with David Letterman first began in 1993. Since then, it has aired over 3300 episodes and shows no sign of slowing down.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Bring a Jacket: The studio for the David Letterman Show usually keeps the air condition running because the stage is very hot with all the lighting. Be prepared and bundle up, or you may end up being very cold during the show recording.
  • Do Laugh: It's actually a rule. Make sure you are laughing at every joke - whether or not you liked it. It's important to the recording of the show, and it's a small thing you can do for the studio after they get you free tickets.
  • Don't Shout Out Anything Obnoxious: You may be tempted to shout out your hometown's name or "Go David!" or something, but keep that urge to yourself. The studio is very serious about rude shout-outs from the audience, and they will immediately escort you out if you do this.
  • Don't Be Late: Running late to the David Letterman Show when you have tickets? Too bad. You most likely will not be let in. They are very quick about filling in stand-by tickets, so make sure you give yourself time to get to the studio if you think you may be late.
