New York Museums

New York City Museums are known worldwide for their high quality exhibits and permanent collections. Manhattan is home to most of the area’s museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History and the newly renovated Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Many museums in New York City are internationally renowned and regarded as one of a kind. For example, the Guggenheim Museum, located along the famous “Museum Mile” (on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, running from 82nd to 105th streets on the Upper East Side) is an architectural landmark with a permanent collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern and contemporary art. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), is located in midtown and is often regarded as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. Other NYC museums feature nature and life sciences, design, culture, history, music and even sports. There is even a group of Children’s museums. In New York City, there are more well-regarded art museums than any other city in the United States. Some of the well know art museums are the American Museum of the Moving Image, Asia Society & Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art. Cultural and historical museums include the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, New York Transit Museum and the South Street Seaport Museum.

Admission to museums is typically reasonably priced and tickets can often be purchased in advance online or by phone. Hours vary by museum with many open daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Please be sure to check with the specific museum or your hotel concierge ahead of time on hours of operation if your travel plans are fixed and less flexible. Parking can be a challenge so take public transportation or a taxi when possible.
