NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Founded in 1977, the New Museum of Contemporary Art prides itself on discovering and promoting talented contemporary artists who have yet to receive the recognition they deserve. In its 33 years, the museum has displayed works by important figures such as David Wojnarowicz, Paul McCarthy, and Andrea Zittel long before they received widespread acclaim.

Why We Go: Unlike other museums in New York, the New Museum of Contemporary Art exclusively shows works by contemporary artists. By visiting this museum, you're sure to stay up with the latest trends in the art community.

  • New Art: As of 2010, the New Museum of Contemporary Art has displayed works by talented up-and-comers Haegue Yang, Isa Genzken, and Brion Gysin. In 2003, the New Museum New York presented the acclaimed exhibition Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
  • Architecture: It's not simply what's inside the New Museum of Contemporary Art that draws people through the door; it's the museum itself. A modern work of genius, the New Museum of Contemporary Art was named one of the seven architectural wonders by Conde Nast Traveler in 2008.
  • Free Tours: When you pay for admission to the New Museum New York, you'll have the chance to participate in free, docent-led public tours of the museum's current exhibitions. During these tours, you'll discuss the provocative works on display in the museum and the striking architecture of the building.

Inside Knowledge: The New Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker. Since then, the museum has come to be one of the most respected art institutions in New York. Named one of the seven architectural wonders of the world by Conde Nast Traveler, the New Museum New York was designed by the Tokyo-based firm Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA and the New York-based firm Gensler.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Grab a Snack: The New Museum of Contemporary Art features a cafe on site. Be sure to grab a bite when you're done touring the museum.
  • Do Use the Resource Center: The Resource Center at the New Museum of Contemporary Art offers visitors books, catalogues, magazines, and digital materials on international contemporary art as well as publications related to current exhibitions. Definitely check it out.
  • Don't Miss Free Tours: Visitors at the New Museum of Contemporary Art will have the chance to participate in free, docent-led tours of the museum's exhibitions. We highly recommend participating, as the docents are friendly, knowledgeable, and very enthusiastic.
  • Don't Forget Your ID: Student visitors at the New Museum of Contemporary Art will receive discounted admission if they can provide a picture student I.D. High school students, if under the age of 18, will receive free admission to the New Museum New York.
