Wine Tasting Cruise - Do It!

I opted to go on the Wine Tasting cruise, which turned out to be a fantastic decision.  Since each week, the wine-tasting is based on a different country, I was intrigued to learn I would be tasting wines and cheese pairings from Spain – I had no idea what to expect. It also ended up being a great way to see the entire island of Manhattan, including the Statue of Liberty.

Stepping on board of the Manhattan ship – appropriately named- I felt welcomed by the captain, Tour Guide Wendy, and the musical accompaniment of Maria, a world-famous flamenco guitarist, playing original melodies.  The boat itself was warm – in atmosphere and temperature. It was a particularly windy day in NYC, so I was pleasantly surprised to find both sides of main area were enclosed with windows, allowing passengers to see everything we passed by, while staying nice and toasty.

There were six tables, with assigned seating and everyone was in friendly spirits, making friends left and right.  We were free to step outside on the deck to see great views and take photos, at anytime, also. The staff was great about pouring (full glasses of) wine and offering seconds if there was anything left in the open bottles during each of the 5 rounds.  Along with 5 wines (one sparkling), there were cheese pairings, jams, fruit and bread which complimented each other very well.

The most surprising aspect of this tour to me was the amount of information provided.  Each passenger was given a packet of charts, maps, and other information to look at while Wendy charmingly explained the origins (history and geography) of each tasty wine and accompanying snack. Wendy was informative, while still being greatly engaging and was happy to answer any questions, including information of where she bought each treat throughout New York City, so we could find our favorites after the tour!

Harbor Line knows how to provide a great tour – they have everything from excellent and friendly staff who are happy to keep the plentiful samples coming, to blankets and life jackets on board to make sure all passengers are comfortable at all times.  They are great about celebrations as well – we toasted (and sang) for each birthday and bachelorette party on board. I recommend this tour to fellow wine-lovers!
