About the New York Jets

Originally known as the Titans of New York, the New York Jets football team was founded in 1960 as part of the American Football League. After a string of early defeats, the NY Jets earned the respect of the National Football League with their 1968 victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The game received much publicity on account of a remark made by legendary NY Jets quarterback Joe Namath, who predictedin fact guaranteedthat the Jets would be victorious. This was no small statement for the Jets, who had heretofore struggled to prove themselves to the NFL; only a few years earlier, when the team was still in its infancy, owner Harry Wismer could not afford to replace injured players, forcing several players to play both offense and defense. The next few decades saw a decline in the Jets, along with several changes in ownership. In 1997, following the resignation of head coach Rich Kotite, the Jets saw a return to respectability.

Having enjoyed brief stays at the Polo Grounds, Shea Stadium, and Giants Stadium, the New York Jets now reside in the massive New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
