Overpriced but Entertaining Attraction - NY Skyride

Many people feel like they paid too much for this popular New York attraction.  You can often get lured in by the men on the street corner offering you a deal and saying that they have the lowest prices.  However, the best price you'll get is at the actual attraction (or with your NY Pass).

If you get an NY Pass and the entrance fee is included, then the NY Skyride can be really fun.  It's not necessarily worth the regular cost of admission or long line, but you probably won't regret it if it's free/cheap.

Features: New York Skyride is the only virtual tour simulator in New York City. Narrated by actor Kevin Bacon, this 30-minute virtual adventure takes you high above the streets of New York, where you'll learn the history of the city and see sights such as Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Yankee Stadium.

Why We Go: A tourist favorite since 1994, the New York Skyride is a fun, family-friendly NYC attraction located on site at the world-famous Empire State Building. Many tour packages include tickets to the NY Skyride.

  • Convincing Action: When you ride the New York Skyride virtual tour simulator, you'll really feel as if you're flying above New York. The illusion is achieved with a specially designed platform which moves in sync to an 18-foot high-definition screen. It's a completely immersive and highly memorable experience. Try it!
  • Cheap Tickets: While $29 for a New York Skyride ticket may seem steep, consider this: a 20-minute helicopter ride over Manhattan typically costs in excess of $200. Really, the New York Skyride is a bargain! (Plus, no Manhattan helicopter tour is narrated by Kevin Bacon!)
  • Moving Tribute: Perhaps the best part of the New York Skyride is its latest addition: a moving tribute to the World Trade Center. On this virtual tour simulator, you'll get to see the Twin Towers as they were over ten years ago, when they were still the tallest buildings in New York.

Inside Knowledge: The original NY Skyride, narrated by James Doohan (Star Trek's Scotty), opened in 1994. In 2002, the tour simulator was updated to become more informative.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Visit the Observation Deck: After enjoying the New York Skyride, don't forget to visit the Empire State Building observation deck, where you'll have stunning views of the Manhattan skyline.
  • Do Expect Long Lines: The New York Skyride is located on the second floor of the Empire State Building, one of the most popular attractions in NYC. Expect long lines, even with a VIP pass. Of course, the ride is well worth the wait!
  • Don't Buy Tickets Outside Building: It's an unfortunate fact that many tourists are regularly scammed into paying exhorbitant prices for New York Skyride tickets. Don't be one of them! Stay away from the fast-talking salesmen outside the Empire State Building.
  • Don't Bring Young Children: While the New York Skyride is fun for kids, very young children, especially those under the age of five, may be unnerved by the jerky, unsettling motions of the motion simulator. Best leave them with a friend.
