The 4th of July in New York City

July Fourth

The 4th of July is the most American holiday and is an amazing event in America's most iconic place: New York City. The home of the Statue of Liberty has a distinct connection to America and it's patriotism, forged by the founding fathers and endured by those on September 11th, 2001. Whether it's spending the day in Central Park, or watching the night skyline lit with 4th of July fireworks, NYC delivers a patriotic experience that can't be had anywhere else.

4th of July Daytime Activities

Even though the fireworks haven't started, there are still plenty of things to do in NYC on 4th of July during the day in the warm summer weather.

July 4th in New York City

Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show is one of the biggest fireworks displays of all time

  • Macy's  4th of July Fireworks: This year's fireworks display to see is the official Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, which will ignite the sky above the Hudson river this year. Over 40,000 pyrotechnic shells will fire from 6 different barges, creating one of the biggest fireworks displays of all time. The New York Pops orchestra, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as well as a capella, gospel, choral groups and barbershop quartets will be performing at 2011's display, making the spectacular event special for locals and tourists alike.

Some of the best spots for viewing the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks are Manhattan's West Side between 23rd and 59th Streets and along the New jersey waterfront. It's a good idea to arrive early, probably around 5pm if you want to get any of the prime 4th of July real estate. Bring food, lawnchairs, and it's especially a good idea to stay hydrated, as the city will heat up even more than usual with so many people in the same space. The display starts officially at 9:20pm, and usually lasts around 25 to 30 minutes. It's also a great idea to book an NYC hotel near the area so that you don't get stuck in too much traffic on this busy night.

  • Circle-Line 4th of July Cruise: If you can't find a rooftop or desirable spot to view the 4th of July fireworks from, a cruise on the Hudson river could be what you're looking for - there's not a better view in the city. Circle-Line's 4th of July Cruise provides the BBQ, music and view of the fireworks without all the hassle of the crowds of people. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the Independence Day view. Tickets are around $70 and the boat sails from 5pm to 11:30pm.
  • Hudson Terrace: If you want a view of the Hudson River in time for NYC's 4th of July fireworks, Hudson Lounge provides. The lounge/restaurant offers cocktails and scenery, but you had better get a ticket in advance, as the 4th of July fireworks viewing party is almost always sold out. Tickets are usually around $150 and the all you can eat BBQ and open bar take place from 6pm to 10:30pm.
