Established in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has one of the most extensive collections of modern art in the entire world with over 135,000 pieces.
Prints & Illustrated Books
The permanent collection displays pivotal works from the last century, grouped into six categories. Prints and illustrated books features an assortment of over 50,000 items branching from black and white woodcuts to digital computerized drawings. Artists include Picasso, Edvard Munch, Sonia Delaunay-Terk and various others.
Architecture & Design
The architecture and design portion features more than 3,000 designs including home furnishings, tools, automobiles, textiles and glass objects. Consistent throughout the exhibit is the emphasis on the synergy between architecture and design.
Photography
Over 25,000 items make up the photography exhibit showcasing scenic views, cities, people, families and pivotal moments in history. This section includes photos not only taken by artists, but amateurs and reporters in the field as well.
Drawing
A versatile gathering of over 6,000 sketches, drawings and paper strewn designs appear in the drawing collection. Works were created using watercolors, charcoal, pen and pencil. Artists include Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Wifredo Lam, Henri Matisse and numerous others.
Film & Media
The most extensive collection of international films in the U.S. is showcased within the film and media section. There's everything from Disney's Steamboat Willie to Orson Welles' Citizen Kane to the brilliant movies of Charlie Chaplin.
Also notable is a series of temporary exhibits that represent the developments and perceptions of new artists. These works are the most recent designs of the ever-evolving modern art world.
