Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Met
1000 Fifth Avenue (82nd Street)
New York, NY 10028                                                                                     Tour the Metropolitan Museum of Modern art

Featuring over three million pieces of art that span the globe, the mere size of the Met is astonishing. If you set aside a full day, there still won't be enough time to explore the entire museum. Here are a few choice galleries and exhibits to consider first.

Egyptian Art Wing
Peruse a bounty of fascinating artwork that portrays the inventive designs, creative sculptures and culture of the ancient Egyptians. There's anything from a bowl with feet to symbolic ceramic animals to guardian sphinxes to ritual ceremonies carved in stone.

Arms & Armor
For centuries armor was created not only for combative scenarios, but to display fine craftsmanship. This section showcases weapons, armor and firearms from around the globe dating from 400 B.C. to the 19th century. Roughly 15,000 pieces are featured with objects ranging from the shield of King Henry II to jousting tournament helms to ivory decorated crossbows to 18th century Japanese armor.

Greek & Roman Art
Examine more than 30,000 pieces of art spanning from the New Stone Age to the rise of Christianity. Pottery and statues played an important role depicting the lives and societal roles of the Romans and Greeks. Peruse anything from ivory and shell seals (used to identify ownership in place of words) to intricately designed vases to the statue head of the emperor Augustus.

Of course, this is merely a glimpse of what the Met has to offer. Keep in mind that temporary exhibits rotate throughout the year, so they aren't included on this page. Check with the museum for current displays and collections: 212.535.7710.
