Summary
Features: St John Cathedral is a beautiful church that is located in Morningside Heights of Manhattan. Over a century, this historic NYC site features some rich neo-gothic architecture. Despite a fire that closed the doors of the New York Cathedral of St John, it opened again in 2008 and continues to run tours and services for visitors.
Why We Go: St John Cathedral is a historical New York attraction that offers hour-long tours for visitors as well as spectacular views of Morningside Heights for people who take the vertical tour to the roof.
- Vertical Tour: The vertical tour is a more expensive tour of the St John Divine Cathedral. This Cathedral tour takes guests to the roof of the New York Cathedral of St John, where visitors are given a spectacular view of the Manhattan area.
- Standard Tour: For visitors that just want to see the lovely interior of the St John Divine Cathedral, they can take the standard $6 tour where they are given information on the church's history as well as a tour of the church with the exception of the roof area.
- Standard Services: The St John Cathedral also offers regular services for those looking for a place to worship. There are services held throughout the day, and a special Sunday schedule for those looking to attend Sunday mass.
Inside Knowledge: The St John Cathedral was not originally supposed to be built with gothic influence. It was originally supposed to be Byzantine-Romanesque architecture, but it was changed in the early 1900s.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Go on the Vertical Tour: We are a big fan of the vertical tour, which offers the best views and details of the church. Even if you are not someone who practices religion, it is worth the tour cost to see Manhattan from the rooftop.
- Do Make Reservations: The Vertical Tours are limited to 20 people, so you should reserve early in order to guarantee a tour for the day you want to visit.
- Don't Forget a Flashlight: This is especially important if you are going on the Vertical Tour. The trip up the stairs and the interior leading up to the roof of the St John Cathedral is very dark, and a flashlight is recommended so that you can safely navigate the stairs.
- Don't Miss the St Patrick Cathedral: If you like gothic architecture or visiting grand churches such as the St John Cathedral, then we also recommend that you check out the St Patrick Cathedral in New York. It is equally stunning.
