Still in all, what makes any street fair great is the entertainment, games and most of all…FOOD!

An international city like New York can only offer the widest variety of food. Standard treats are zeppolis, sausages, funnel cakes and stir-fry with the classic New York "egg cream" to wash it all down.

Street fair entertainment usually consists of live bands performing somewhere in the middle area. Larger fairs will often have several bands along its route. Like its food, variety is reflected in New York music as well, from doo-wop to salsa to an authentic klezmer band.

Still, the majority of a street fair is made up of vendors selling their wares. Great bargains on jeans, T-shirts and especially socks and underwear are always to be found. Another staple is the salesman demonstrating his latest gadget! You can watch a live infomercial every 10 minutes!

For those interested in jewelry, handcrafters of unique rings, bracelets, earrings and pendants are always present and always worth checking out.

Spending the day at a street fair can be a lot of fun but unless you’re a shopaholic visiting several of these fairs week after week gets monotonous - you see the same things over and over.

Your best bet is to visit the fairs you want to go to, like the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival held each May and stumble upon the smaller, neighborhood fairs when walking and exploring the city with friends or a loved one...
