Top Ten Things to Do in Staten Island

  1. Find your zen at the Chinese Scholar's Garden. A recreation of a Ming Dynasty scholar's garden in China, this is one of the most beautiful and blissful spots in NYC, with gorgeous greenery and more.
  2. Spot your favorite animal at the Staten Island Zoo. The zoo has a petting zoo and lots of other animals that children will love seeing up close.
  3. Walk through the park at Fort Wadsworth. The fort played a crucial role during the Revolutionary War, and the public is welcome to explore its historical grounds and go for a lovely stroll through the park afterwards.
  4. Discover the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. This cultural center houses an art gallery, serene gardens, music venues and more.
  5. Explore a historical site at The Conference House. This house is the site of an attempted peace treaty meeting during the Revolutionary War, and Benjamin Franklin and John Adams met here with the British Admiral Richard Howe. Now, we know that those negotiations didn't exactly work out, but it is interesting to see where this took place and walk around the only pre-revolutionary manor house surviving in NYC.
  6. Catch a show at the St. George Theatre. This gorgeous theatre was originally constructed in 1928, and visitors will feel whisked away to another era by the exquisite decor. It is still a functioning theater, and you can enjoy one of the big-name music or comedy shows that is put on here.
  7. Relax at the Franklin D Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach. Even though the boardwalk itself was damaged by hurricane Sandy, visitors will still enjoy kicking back at the beach on a sunny day and watching all of the boats coming to shore.
  8. Take in the view of Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry. Be sure to travel over to Staten Island on the ferry, which offers truly stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. Don't forget your camera, as you're going to want to snap a few photos of the legendary view.
  9. Travel back in time at Historic Richmond Town. Somewhat like New York's equivalent of Colonial Williamsburg, this 100-acre village dates back as far as the 17th Century, and 27 of the original buildings are open to the public, like the one-room General Store and Voorleezer's House, one of the oldest buildings on the property.
  10. Try your hand at fishing at the Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier. Attempt to reel in a fish at this Staten Island Pier, which also provides great views of the water and all of the boats.
