Summary
Features: Tompkins Square Park in East Village is a great center piece of Alphabet City, bringing together the range of eclectic residents for outdoor recreation and NYC festivals, welcoming people and dogs of all ages. In the 1980s this area was rough, and Tompkins Square Park was host to riots, but after being closed, Tompkins Square Park New York has become a beautiful gentrified recreation spot with basketball, ping pong, chess, a playground and much more available for the youth of East Village.
Why We Go: Tompkins Square NYC is a pet-friendly park in East Village resembles this area accurately, once known for park riots, problems and tragedy, after restoration is now a safe and clean place for families, musical gatherings and tourism.
- Dog Friendly: Tompkins Square Park New York is home to one of the top dog runs in NYC, not only welcoming your four-legged friends, but actually providing specific park space for them to mix, mingle and play with other dogs with three swimming pools, picnic tables and pet bathing areas.
- Activities: Aside from a playground for kids, all ages can take advantage of the basketball courts, handball courts, and clean paths for walking and running throughout Tompkins Square Park New York. A built-in chess table and ping pong table are two unique additions as well.
- Plentiful Elm Trees: Arguably one of the best things about Tompkins Square Park NYC is the beautiful green Elm Trees. In the warmer months, the paths through the park are lined with plentiful green leaves, matching the green park benches, and in the fall as the leaves turn, the fall scene is equally beautiful here. Take a walk around any day of the week and enjoy the fresh air!
Inside Knowledge: Tompkins Square NYC was closed in the '90s due to riots, large numbers of homeless people gathering and overall restoration. After a makeover, complete with park curfew, recreation built-in, and a clean new look, Tompkins Square NYC is now home to music festivals and local visitors.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Attend Wigstock: Wigstock is an annual drag festival held in Tompkins Square Park, welcoming friends of all orientations to join in a day of fun, East Village style. This annual festival started in the gay community in the '80s as a way to end the summer with a bang each Labor Day.
- Do Check Out Charlie Parker Jazz Festival: This cultural event in NYC is held annually at Tompkins Square NYC to celebrate music diversity, in honor of the once East Village resident, Charlie Parker.
- Don't Miss the Summer Fun: Tompkins Square Park New York is fun year-round, but in the summer time you won't want to miss the water fountain that sporadically spews refreshingly cool water. Bring the kids to play and cool off!
- Don't Skip Equipment: Equipment is available to use to go along with the athletic courts and tables available in Tompkins Square NYC. You can find sporting equipment between Avenues A and B, from East 7th to East 10th Street.

A Lovely Stop in East Village
While I was happily staying in the East Village, I wanted to explore the area as much as possible and take in all that this radical neighborhood has to offer. Before starting my day of tourist attractions in midtown, I grabbed a bagel and a coffee at Ray’s Pizza & Bagel on St. Marks Place and walked straight down the street a few blocks to Tompkins Square Park to sit and enjoy my breakfast.
There are so many parks within New York City, and to be honest I really enjoyed most of them, but Tompkins Square was on my list of favorites, along with Central Park, Bryant Park and Washington Square. The lawns were green, and on this particular early November day, the leaves had just started changing.
Beautiful trees are sprinkled about and adorable pathways lead me to two playgrounds and a dog park. I also came across chess tables throughout the park. There are tons of cute park benches which are great for people watching, and one of them became my breakfast-eating destination.
I really enjoyed sitting in the park, and it was the perfect peaceful way to start my morning before heading into chaotic Times Square! Heading to the park was also a great way to discover a ton of cafés and shops along St. Marks Place.
