Tony Award Winning Musicals - The Book of Mormon
Perhaps the biggest 2011 Tony Award winner was The Book of Mormon Musical. Featuring a book, lyrics, and music by Robert Lopez (Avenue Q) and Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park), The Book of Mormon Broadway won an astounding nine of the 14 Tony Awards for which it had been nominated, including the awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical.
The Book of Mormon Musical tells the story of an unlikely pair of young Mormon missionaries who are sent to a remote village in northern Uganda to convert the natives to Mormonism. While raunchy and lewd, The Book of Mormon Broadway surprises with its heartfelt message about the value of religion and the meaning of friendship.
