Alright, for clarification purposes, let's get one thing straight: it's Rockefeller Plaza. There. We got that out of the way. OK, moving on...
Rockefeller Plaza is (un)officially the center of Manhattan. There are less wackos than Times Square, some better shopping nearby and, in the winter, the iconic skating rink that is supposedly incredibly hard and expensive to actually skate on. However, in the summer, it's basically a great meeting point with some quality little cafes and photo opportunities.
I came here on a Monday afternoon and the place was mobbed with visitors taking photos, pretty cool considering there wasn't a whole lot going on. (A few weeks later the NFL Opening Kickoff would take place pretty much right where I was sitting.) A friend and I killed some time while we waited our turn for the Top of the Rock; we struck out in an attempt to find a table inside (air-conditioning) and were forced to hotter pastures which, admittedly wasn't so bad and included some great people-watching.
In my opinion, the coolest part of being at Rockefeller Plaza was knowing I was at 30 Rock, home of NBC Studios and Radio City Music Hall. Like a lot of my favorite spots in New York, there's a feeling of history surrounding 30 Rock, and its prominence as perhaps the most famous address in all of NYC make it a must for first-time New Yorkers hoping to cross off all the old-standby's from their New York bucket list.
Not much else to say about Rockefeller Plaza, other than the fact that I would love to be lucky enough to visit during the holiday season. That being said, it's not so bad in the summer, either.
