If you're traveling with the little ones, the NY Skyride will be a fun treat for them on your way up to the Empire State Building. Older NYC tourists will definitely be amused by this virtual tour of New York (though don't be surprised if your stomach gets queasy her and there), but the Skyride works best when you're with kids.
The Skyride puts all riders on a rocking machine in front of a large, theater-style movie screen. The sensation is that of riding in a helicopter, and the bird's-eye footage is pretty spectacular. There are some hints of a sci-fi theme going here but, for the most part, it keeps it simple by sticking to the helicopter-style simulator it's promoted as.
The whole ride lasts about 20 minutes, and ranges from slow and easy-moving to fast and furious. Plus, Kevin Bacon (!) is the narrator of this helicopter simulation, and his charisma and enthusiasm for the gig actually add a quite a bit to the overall experience. Mr. Bacon dishes NYC facts as quickly as the Skyride itself can move, and in my opinion the narration was just as fun as the ride itself. (I'm sure the kiddies will disagree, but hey, that's just my opinion.)
My advice? Bring the kids, split a bag of popcorn and immerse yourself in the old-school amusement of the NY Skyride. The Skyride is light fun perfect for the NYC tourists looking for interactive family fun in Manhattan.
