New York City Carriage Rides in History & Pop Culture

Before the advent of motor vehicles, horse-drawn carriages were the main mode of transportation in New York City. While taxi-cabs and subway trains have since taken their place, horse-drawn carriages hold an important place in the rich history of NYC.

  • In an iconic scene from the 1979 film, Manhattan, Woody Allen and Mariel Hemingway take a romantic carriage ride through Central Park.
  • Contrary to popular belief, carriage horses do not live in Central Park. Rather, they are housed in one of five multi-storied warehouse stables throughout the city.
  • The carriage horse industry is banned in major cities including Las Vegas, Nevada; Palm Beach, Florida; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Paris, France; London, England; and Beijing, China, because of inhumane practices and conditions for horses within the industry.
  • In 1885, New York City was home to approximately 7,810 horse-drawn vehicles.
  • Today, there are approximately 350 carriage drivers and over 200 horses in NYC.
  • Carriage horses are prohibited in Manhattan (including Central Park) Monday through Friday from 7am- 10am, and in Manhattan (excluding Central Park) from 10am- 9pm.
