The New Shea Stadium Blows the Old One Away

Summary
Features: Long considered "the other baseball team" in NYC, the Mets Citi Field gives this National League team one of the strongest new ballparks in the MLB. With wide concourses, a smart bridge motif symbolic of the five boros of NYC, and the signature "Big Apple" that rises from centerfield after each NY Mets home run, Citi Field NY provides a wonderful baseball experience for passionate and casual fans alike.
Why We Go: The new home of the team from Queens - the New York Mets - Citi Field is a modern ballpark inspired by the long history of baseball in NYC. This beautiful $900 million stadium opened in 2009, and seats just under 42,000 - about 15,000 less than the Mets previous home, Shea Stadium.
- Traditional Design: The New Shea Stadium (as some fans still like to call it) pays tribute to legendary NY baseball stadiums from the past. The green seats are an homage to the Polo Grounds, and the exterior of Citi Field is designed to look like Ebbets Field, the former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- Modern Architecture: While the Mets Citi Field is designed to look traditional, the interior is all modern. Fans won't miss a minute of the action with the wide concourses that span all the way around Citi Field, and the many on-site restaurants allow fans to grab a more upscale bite to eat before the game.
- Easy Access: The NY Mets recommend guests get to Citi Field via mass transit, and a subway ride from Penn Station lasts just 15 minutes.
Inside Knowledge: Citi Field offers tours of the stadium year-round, giving fans access to exclusive areas like the dugout, team clubhouse, and even the field! Tickets are available in advance, and start at just $12.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Check Out the Mets Museum: Located on the first base side of Mets Citi Field, the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum details the history of upstart NY baseball team and all the great players who played at Shea Stadium, including Dwight Gooden, Mike Piazza and Darryl Strawberry.
- Do Eat at Shake Shack: While Mets Citi Field does offer plenty of food options on its massive concourse, the most popular concession is the Shake Shack. Try one of their famous burgers from the comfort of Citi Field in Queens.
- Don't Drive to Citi Field: Parking is expensive around Citi Field ($19), and NYC traffic can get crowded in a hurry. We recommend hopping on the subway for a fraction of the price and time.
- Don't Miss the After-Party: Win or lose, McFadden's Saloon behind Citi Field is the place to booze before and after the game. While you can't access McFadden's during the game, this Irish pub is open until 4am afterwards.

Citi Field is Definitely Worth a Trip to Queens
If you're a Mets fan (or a baseball fan in general), you'll enjoy taking a ride to Queens to visit Citi Field. This baseball stadium will impress all baseball fans. It is well-known for its intimacy, which you will be able to understand once you arrive; there isn't a bad seat in the whole stadium. You might be able to catch a Mets game, if you head to New York during baseball season. If not, Citi Field hosts many concerts, and the seating creates a great concert atmosphere for every type of music. Whether you're heading out there for a specific event or just looking to take a glance at the stadium, you won't be disappointed by Citi Field.
