Summary
Features: Formerly known as the New York State Theater, the David H. Koch Theater is a multipurpose event venue designed for opera and ballet performances. It is located in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Why We Go: For many years, the David H. Koch Theater has been home to the New York City Ballet and the New York City Opera (although the latter recently announced plans to search for a new performance venue). Outstanding acoustics and breathtaking architecture ensure that this theater will always have crowds.
- New York City Ballet: Having long called the David H. Koch Theater home, the New York City Ballet is one of the most famous ballet companies in the world. It's no wonder: with legendary productions such as George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, the New York City Ballet has earned many fans.
- Beautiful Architecture: Designed by architect Philip Johnson, the former New York State Theater features four ornate balconies, a breathtaking chandelier, and a beautifully lit promenade adorned with works of modern art. There's not a bad seat in the house!
- Convenient Location: Located in Manhattan's Upper West Side, the David H. Koch Theater is close to many of the best restaurants in New York City, making it an excellent choice for those who would like to dine out and catch a show.
Inside Knowledge: The David H. Koch Theater is currently named for billionaire philanthropist David Hamilton Koch, who pledged to provide $100 million for the restoration of the theater. The theater will bear his name for 50 years, and his family will have right of first refusal for any renaming.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Watch NYC Ballet: The New York City Ballet has been a fixture in New York City for over 50 years. Don't miss the opportunity to see this legendary ballet company perform at the beautiful Lincoln Center Theater.
- Do Dress Appropriately: If you plan on catching a performance at the former New York State Theater, be sure to dress up: a cocktail dress for ladies and a sport coat or blazer for men.
- Don't Bring Young Children: While children are welcome to attend performances at the David H. Koch Theater, we would advise you against bringing very young children - those inclined to fidgeting and crying - to shows, as they might disturb other theatergoers.
- Don't Wait to Buy Tickets: Tickets to performances at the David H. Koch Theater sell out fast. We recommend buying your tickets at least a month in advance, if possible.
