Summary
Features: Established in 1888, Katz Deli in New York City has been a dining landmark, and is one of the most famous Delis in the world. This historic Kosher-style Deli on Manhattan's Lower East Side features some of the best pastrami sandwiches in the world, along with their famous hot dogs and pickles, and traditional Jewish cuisine like knishes and matzo ball soup. Katz Deli NYC is a New York institution.
Why We Dine: Because of its cultural significance alone, Katz Deli NYC is a must-see for New York visitors and residents alike. But they also have friendly service and phenomenal food, with meats served in true Deli style.
- History: Katz New York Deli has several significant moments that make the you feel like you're eating inside a part of history. During World War II, Katz Deli encouraged parents to "send a salami to your boy in the army," a phrase Katz Deli still embraces today. Katz New York has arranged special international shipping to troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Katz Deli also had a big cultural moment in the 1980's in the film When Harry Met Sally. The famous 'I'll have what she's having' scene took place in Katz Deli NYC , and the restaurant has a placard at the exact booth commemorating that scene.
- Amazing Meats: Katz New York Deli is known for its tender pastrami sandwiches and excellent beef brisket. You'll love the succulent Reuben sandwich, made with Katz Deli's signature corned-beef. We recommend Katz New York's world famous kosher-style hot dogs. There are also some incredible deserts on the menu, one of the best being the genuine New York Cheesecake.
- Celebrities: The photographs of countless celebrities adorn the walls of Katz New York Deli, from Ben Stiller to Jon Favreau to former United States President Bill Clinton. You may be able to snag a celebrity sighting looking up from your delicious lunch plate.
Inside Knowledge: Katz New York Deli is featured in the movie Across the Universe, in the scene where the character Max finds out he is being drafted into the army.
We Recommend:
- Katz's Original Recipe Salami: Get your hands on a cold salami sandwich, as the flavorful Italian meat is one of the most famous entities Katz Deli is known for. You can also get hot salami sandwich open faced, or even buy some hard salami for the road or to ship outside of New York.
- Katz's Knoblewurst: A full size garlic-sausage, this brat is not for the faint of stomach. Celebrity chef Mike Psilakis once called it the best thing he had ever eaten. A must-have for visitors of Katz Deli NYC.

Katz Deli - A Meat Lover and Movie Buff's Dream
I first saw Katz Deli while on a TV & Movie Sights bus tour, where they mentioned all the on-screen scenes this famous deli has been in, probably most notably the “I’ll have what she’s having” scene from When Harry Met Sally. I also learned the woman who delivers that line was actually the director's Mom. But onto the restaurant...
It’s one of those places I’ve always known about , but even during my other trips to New York, I had never gone before. Meat-lovers would have a field day with the sandwiches at this place- they are enormous piles of meat on bread. I’m actually not quite sure how you’d get your mouth around it – I saw some patrons using a fork and knife, so I thought that would be the way to go.
There are definitely other options on the menu, but hot dogs and roast beef sandwiches are by far the most popular items. It’s not quite a vegetarian’s dream.
The food is pretty good, but fairly expensive, although one sandwich can easily serve as two meals. I think a lot of people go for the atmosphere, knowing it’s a famous spot in NYC – with good reason.
