The name SoHo stands for South of Houston and this nickname is the first of all NYC neighborhood names to be an acronym. The area that SoHo encompasses starts just south of Houston Street and is everything north of Canal Street, between Broadway and Crosby.

Over many decades, the area that is now SoHo New York has gone through many changes to become what it is today.

Over many decades, the area that is now SoHo New York has gone through many changes to become what it is today. Currently known for world-class galleries, outstanding real estate, top-notch shopping and an array of eateries, this community's land was first discovered in the 1600s. At this time Indian tribes lived on the grass meadows.

By the 1800s, following the Civil War, life had changed drastically in the area. As life's pace started speeding up, so did the import and exporting industry. Textiles became a top outlet for trade and wholesale, drawing in many businesses that would arise in the coming years. Throughout the 19th Century, SoHo neighborhood started to fill with families, poets, cultural eateries and music halls.

Throughout the 1960s, SoHo really began coming into its own, with emerging artists such as Meredith Monk, Frank Stella, Phillip Glass and many more. Creative and artistic industries began to flourish in this small community, helping to mold it into the beloved artsy area of NYC locals and tourists adore.

  • Public Transportation: Traveling to and from SoHo is fairly easy using public transportation such as the NY Subway.  Various subway lines run through the area on Spring Street, Broadway and Lafayette, Prince Street, Spring Street, Houston Street and Canal Street. Check the New York Subway map and schedule for specific times and subway lines.
  • Taxis: Just like anywhere in New York City, taxis in and around SoHo are a very popular way to get around, although they will cost you. We recommend taking a cab if the weather is nasty, otherwise take a walk through town to avoid cab fares.
  • By Foot: Especially during the mild weathered months, taking a stroll through SoHo is arguably the best way to see the area. Walk through the streets to discover welcoming cafes, restaurants, art galleries and shops.
