Summary
Features: McSorleys NYC in the East Village is New York's oldest and most historic bar, a must-see for beer enthusiasts visiting NYC. Established in 1854, McSorleys New York looks about the same as it did when it first opened - sawdust floors, long wooden communal tables, and antique NY bar fixtures. For a classic NYC bar experience you have to see to believe, visit McSorleys Ale House in Manhattan.
Why We Go: It's all about the history - and the ale - at McSorleys NYC. This popular NYC bar serves just two kinds of beer, McSorleys NYC Dark and McSorleys New York Light, and are purchased two beers at a time, every time.
- NYC Bar History: McSorleys NYC has a storied history unmatched by any New York City bar. Past patrons at this famous NY bar include Abraham Lincoln, Woody Guthrie, and John Lennon!
- Ale ... And Nothing Else: Don't bother ordering a cocktail, or a Budweiser, or anything else at McSorleys Bar NYC. All you need to know are two words - dark and light. Seriously, that's all they have at McSorleys New York. And they're both delicious.
- Classic Bar Snacks: NY bar snacks at McSorleys Bar NYC include simple pleasures - crackers, cheese and chili. Again, this historic New York bar in the East Village likes to keep it simple.
Inside Knowledge: McSorleys New York didn't allow women into this NYC bar until 1970, after they were sued by the National Organization for Women. Ironically, the bar was owned by a woman from 1939- 1974, who kept her promise of a hands-off approach after she inherited this classic NY bar from her father.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Order Two Beers: Look like a McSorleys New York veteran by ordering two beers at the bar. This action is mandatory anyways at McSorley's NYC (for the cheap cost of just $5), but it will make you look like you know what you're doing, which is always fun.
- Do Bring Cash: McSorley's Bar NYC is cash only. Did you expect anything less from New York City's oldest bar?
- Don't Order a Cocktail: If you're not a beer drinker, you may want to avoid McSorleys Ale House ... they haven't sold hard liquor since 1906.
- Don't Be Afraid to Make Friends: The communal antique tables at McSorleys NYC are first come, first served. Open seats are fair game at McSorleys historic bar in Manhattan, so grab a table with some strangers and make friends at this popular NYC bar.
