Summary
Features: Memphis the Musical plays at Shubert Theatre in New York City. Packed full of thrillingly energetic choreography by Sergio Trujillo, explosive rock, blues and gospel songs and an intriguing story of forbidden multi-racial love in the South during the 1950s. Based on real events, this love story follows a young white radio DJ, Huey, who breaks the mold by playing rebellious "race" music. As he enters the world of underground dance clubs and continues to push for progression in the airwaves, Huey meets his love interest, Felicia, a black singer trying to make her big break.
Why We Go: Memphis on Broadway is anything but boring. Packed with punch, the charged stage is full of incredible talent, telling the story of Huey and Felicia's individual struggles in the music industry as they also struggle as a couple under the shadow of forbidden love.
- The Music: Both leading characters are driven by their passions for music to make a difference and a name for themselves and this musical features award-winning music and lyrics that help tell the story of the Memphis Broadway Musical.
- The Energy: Memphis Broadway possessed an electric energy from start to finish and the stage is bursting with talent, captivating audiences from the first musical number "Underground," all the way through the closing curtain call.
- Award-Winning Musical: Memphis the musical has received eight Tony Awards, including "Best Musical," "Best Direction of a Musical," "Best Costume Design of a Musical" and more, as well as seven Drama World Awards.
Inside Knowledge: Main character, Huey is based on real-life Memphis DJ from the 1950s, Dewey Phillips, who was the first radio DJ to ever spin an Elvis Presley record. Driven by his love of "race" music, Huey is a pioneer in radio who changes the industry and music in mainstream America forever, much like the impact Dewey Phillips had.

Memphis - Music, Comedy, Love and Dance, All for the Price of One.
Going into Memphis, I was really excited to see the Musical of the Year from 2010. I love a good story based on love for music, and I love musicals in general, and a friend in NY told me it would be right up my alley – she couldn’t have been more right.
Shubert Theater in Times Square is in a great location. I bought my ticket around 6pm for an 8pm show, so I wandered around Times Square, easily killing time with shopping, grabbed a bite to eat, and headed over for show time.
As I walked into the theater I heard people conversing about the same things I was thinking – this is a beautiful theater. It’s one of the older buildings and the architecture inside is really nice. I had a pretty centered mezzanine seat, and Shubert Theater is small enough that I doubt there’s a bad seat in the house. One woman in front of me complained a lot about the seats not accommodating her bad back, but everyone else around me was perfectly fine. I don’t fault the theater one bit for their seating style.
The play was completely entertaining from start to finish. I got chills during the opening song as the stage was filled with African-American characters getting’ down to the rhythm of soulful blues, set in a 1950s club in Memphis, Tennessee. So many times throughout the play I forgot I was watching a play – I got so wrapped up in the music and the performances, as well as the emotional bonds they make.
The main character, goofy, young, white up and coming radio DJ, Huey, played his part so convincingly. The audience not only felt for him because he’s charismatic and you root for him in his career, but he fought so many obstacles for the woman he loved, in a time where inter-racial relationships did not exist in the public eye.
There were a few moments where I knew I wasn’t alone in tearing up, sitting in the audience. There were also plenty of moments where I was laughing out loud with the woman next to me. This play touched on so many amazing aspects of progression, love, history and the amazing unity music can provide. I absolutely loved this show and was more impressed than I expected to be. From the first scene through the last, I was captured by these amazing characters and the incredible musical performances.
