New York City April Events

New York City April Events
There's no shortage of fun things to do in New York City in April. The weather is typically mild at this time of year, so you'll probably have ample time to walk the city streets and admire the famous NYC sights. However, because the weather can be unpredictable, we recommend creating a travel itinerary with both indoor and outdoor events. You might begin by spending a few relaxed, uncomplicated hours in Central Park NY in a rowboat on the Lake; or, if the weather's inclement, you might pass the afternoon in one of New York City's famous museums, such as The Frick Collection Museum or the New Museum of Contemporary Art. You might plan a night of NYC pre-theater dining at Todd English Restaurant, followed by a hit Broadway show like Wicked the Musical; or you might venture out to the 265-acre Bronx Zoo, the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States. Music lovers might catch a show at Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden, while crafts lovers will want to attend a live taping of the Martha Stewart Show.
Listed below are a few of our favorite things to do in April in NYC.
Macy's Flower Show

Macy's Flower Show is free to the public and perfect for kids and adults.
What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than with a flower show? Every year in late March and early April, Macy's Herald Square transforms from a massive retail store into a breathtaking garden with over 30,000 types of flowers and flowering trees. This fun NYC event, known as Macy's Flower Show, is free to the public and perfect for kids and adults. Of course, you don't have to be a botanist to enjoy this event. In past years, Macy's Flower Show has featured cooking demonstrations, prize giveaway contests, and other in-store events and seminars.
Free guided tours are available for those interested in learning about the plant varieties, centerpieces, and how the show was put together. These tours, offered every half hour from 11am-4pm, begin at the Macy's entrance on 35th and Broadway and last 20 minutes.

If you're a bride-to-be, you simply must attend The Wedding Salon Trade Show. At this exciting NYC event, held annually in April, you'll have the chance to compare venues, preview honeymoon destinations, and check out the latest trends in wedding photography, floral arrangements, beauty services, catering, gowns and formalwear, and more. Not only that, you'll get to meet some of the big names in the wedding industry. In past years, the celebrity stylists and planners of Demi Moore, Jessica Simpson, and Christina Aguilera have made frequent appearances.

The Big Swim NYC

The Big Swim NYC allows children between the ages of six and 16 with the opportunity to swim alongside real Olympic athletes.
If you're looking for free things to do in New York City, look no further than The Big Swim. This NYC charity event, held each year in April at the Asphal Green Swimming Complex, provides children between the ages of six and 16 with the opportunity to swim alongside real Olympic athletes, including divers, synchronized swimmers, and relay racers from the American and Canadian teams. Of course, your kids don't have to be expert swimmers to enjoy this event; The Big Swim NY is designed for swimmers of all skill levels and is best perceived, not as a competition, but as an opportunity for a good time.
Note that to participate, swimmers must be registered in advance. The registration deadline for The Big Swim in NY usually ends ten days before the event, but we encourage you to register well before that.
Tartan Day Parade
Are you Scottish? Do you have a strong, inexplicable attraction to bagpipes and Tartan kilts? If you answered yes to either of these questions, the Tartan Day Parade is for you. Held each year in April following the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, this NYC parade celebrates Scottish independence with dozens of floats and hundreds of Scottish musicians. A typical Tartan Day Parade draws nearly 2,000 participants and 700 kilted bagpipers.
The Tartan Day Parade NYC begins at 2pm on West 45th Street and Sixth Avenue and travels ten blocks down the streets of Manhattan. Admission is free and registration may be completed online in advance.
