Eclectic Art at MoMa PS1

Step outside of Manhattan and head to Long Island City to stroll around MoMa PS1.  This museum delivers some very modern art; the type of art ranges from photographs and paintings to multimedia works.  While some of this art may seem a bit "out there" for some museum-goers, it is still very interesting to see how people's views on art can differ so dramatically.  MoMa PS1 also hosts many fun events that feature interactive art and great music.

Features: MoMa PS1 is a contemporary art museum that is located in Long Island City New York. The NY PS1 Museum of Art is affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The PS1 Museum NYC serves as both a display for cutting edge and experimental art as well as a workshop and studio for artists looking to do something out of the ordinary.

Why We Go: MoMA PS1 serves as one of the oldest and best collections of experimental art in the United States. It displays a wide variety of different pieces, ranging from the slightly more convention to the just plain weird.

  • Experimental: Ever wondered what a white spring sitting on a small coffee table means? You probably will when you see things like it in MoMa PS1, the home for some of the most experimental and unique artwork in the United States.
  • Free to locals: NY PS1 Museum of Art encourages locals from Long Island City, as well as public school students from New York to check out the ever-changing face of the art world. Locals and NYC students receive free admission to MoMa PS1.
  • Warm Up: MoMa PS1 is also home to Warm Up, a summer-long Saturday concert series that includes a wide variety of music and culture into the Long Island City of New York.

Inside Knowledge: PS1 Museum NYC was first opened in 1976, although it was founded in 1971. It is one of the oldest contemporary art exhibits in the United States, and became affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art in 2000 in order to bolster both exhibits and both collections of artwork.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do come for the events: The major events that are held here, specifically the Warm Up on summer weekends, are an absolute blast. Not only will you get a chance to check out the exhibits, but you will also get to experience some incredible music.
  • Do come with an open mind: Some of the artwork here is bizarre, unique, and sometimes in-your-face offensive. Be sure to come with an open mind if you want to appreciate some of the fantastic exhibits here.
  • Don't expect G material: If you are worried about having your six-year-old see artwork that could be sexually explicit, then we would recommend you leave the little one at home. Some of the artwork here can be pretty explicit.
  • Don't come on Tuesday or Wednesday: MoMa PS1 is closed on two days each week: Tuesday and Wednesday. Make sure that you don't plan to come on these days if you would like to check out this art institution.
