NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Housed in the former Henry Clay Frick House, designed by Thomas Hastings and constructed in 1914, the Frick Collection Museum is one of the finest small art museums in the United States, with a quality collection of old master paintings housed in 16 galleries. One of the most opulent museums in New York City, the Frick Collection NYC opened to the public on December 16, 1935.

Why We Go: Even those with no taste for fine art will appreciate the grandiosity of the Frick Collection Museum. Originally built in 1914, Henry Clay Frick's Fifth Avenue mansion cost $5,000,000 and features private gardens both on the avenue front and in the interior courtyard.

  • A Unique Experience: Unlike other museums, which arrange works of art by date or artist or style, the Frick Collection Museum arranges paintings solely by Frick's own design. This juxtaposition of dissimilar works makes for a unique museum experience.
  • Diverse Collection: The Frick Collection Museum features a diverse permanent collection representating the Old Masters, English eighteenth-century portraits, Dutch seventeenth-century works of art, Italian Renaissance paintings, Limoge enamels, Chinese porcelains, and French eighteenth-century furniture.
  • Famous Artists: Among those artists represented in the Frick Collection are Rembrandt, Giovanni Bellini, El Greco, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Francois Boucher, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Joseph Mallord William Turner, James McNeill Whistler, Francesco Laurana, Jean-Antoine Houdon, and Severo Calzetta da Ravenna.

Inside Knowledge: The Frick Collection was founded by Henry Clay Frick, the Pittsburgh coke and steel industrialist, who, upon his death in 1919, bequeathed his massive New York residence and his vast collection of sculptures, drawings, prints, and paintings to establish a public gallery. As of 2010, the Frick Collection Museum boasts a permanent collection of more than 1,100 works of art from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Take an Audio Guide: The Frick Collection Museum proudly offers Acoustiguide audio tours, a digital audio guide that provides recorded information about the masterpieces on display through a lightweight, handheld listening device.
  • Do Leave Your Bags at Home: Travel luggage, camping backpacks, and garment bags are not permitted in the Frick Collection Museum, and cannot be checked upon entry. We recommend leaving these bulky items at home.
  • Don't Expect Your Average Museum: The Frick Collection Museum is unlike any of the other museums in New York. For one thing, it is housed in a mansion, the former home of steel and coke magnate Henry Clay Frick. For another, the paintings are not arranged by style or chronology, but by Frick's own subjective design.
  • Don't Bring the Kids: The Frick Collection Museum is intended purely for adults. We recommend making other arrangements for your kids, as children under the age of 10 are not admitted.
