Summary
Features: First opened in 1949 with funds donated by Kate Wollman, Wollman Skating Rink is a large, public ice skating rink in the southern part of Central Park. This NYC skating rink offers youth and adult hockey classes and private ice skating lessons. Private tents may be rented for parties and events.
Why We Go: Nothing can compare to the romance of ice skating in Central Park. Because of its size, Wollman Skating Rink is perfect for skaters of all skill levels - both experienced and inexperienced skaters will have ample room.
- Size: With a rink surface area of 30,800 square feet, an outdoor patio of 6,000 square feet, and a rooftop terrace of 8,500 square feet, Wollman Skating Rink is one of the largest ice skating rinks in New York City. The rink at Rockefeller Center is tiny by comparison.
- Events: Wollman Skating Rink is the perfect place for your next party or event. With a maximum capacity of 2,000, this NYC skating rink boasts a state-of-the-art sound system, aesthetic lighting, and full, on-site catering services by Relish Caterers. It is the perfect choice for corporate outings, fundraisers, holiday parties, and large social gatherings.
- Pond Hockey: Hockey fan? Wollman Skating Rink features beginner and intermediate pond hockey classes for adults on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Classes cost $45. Goalies play for free.
Inside Knowledge: Wollman Skating Rink opened in 1949 with funds donated by Kate Wollman. A favorite spot for tourists and native New Yorkers alike, the rink was once a popular site for summer rock concerts. As of 2011, it continues to host the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Visit the Park in Summer: Those not interested in ice skating in New York might prefer to visit Wollman Skating Rink in the summer, when it hosts the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park. Rides include the Family Swinger, Samba Ballon, Aeromax, HydroRacer, and Mini Mouse Coaster.
- Do Go on a Weekday: If you plan on attending this NYC ice skating rink with a group of people, definitely go on a weekday, when Wollman Skating Rink offers significantly discounted rates. Your savings will be considerable.
- Don't Drive to Wollman: There is no parking at Wollman Skating Rink or within Central Park. We recommend walking to the park entrance at Central Park South (59th Street) and Sixth Avenue. The footpath leads directly to the rink.
- Don't Be Shy: Afraid of falling on the ice? Take an NYC ice skating class at Wollman Skating Rink. Group classes and private lessons are available seven days a week and are appropriate for skaters of all skill levels.

A Rink With Room To Grow
Wollman Ice Rink is great for ice skaters of all skill levels, especially if you want some room to practice before showing off your moves in the spectacle that is The Rink at Rockefeller Center. Central Park is undeniably amazing, so what better place to go ice skating in the wide open park with trees all around? Not only are the surroundings open, but the rink itself is one of the largest in NYC, so there is plenty of room for all sorts of skaters – big groups, couples, beginners who need some space, and even big groups. It’s the perfect place to practice and I think it’s one of the best ice rinks for kids because of this.
